Limit Breaker: Cordia by DarkMage2 Limit Breaker: Cordia by DarkMage2
Well, it's finally done- my intended submission for Day 30 of the now well passed Equestria Daily second NATG.

..So, this is basically what happens when you take away all my time limits and stuff. I hope it was worth the long wait, though I have doubts myself for various reasons. Even though it's probably my best colour artwork ever, I've had lots of other ideas and stuff I haven't been able to work on in the meantime, and in the end it's still not that good.

Lots of mistakes and stuff, and my camera's resolution is indeed confirmed to be too low for a drawing of this size, much to my dismay while colouring certain ponies.

I'll probably wait until my skill is higher before trying something like this again, unless you guys think it is actually worth waiting like two weeks. Personally I preferred doing the daily story updates of the NATG, if only because it was more engaging.

Ehhh, I'll just whatever.

Anyway, there was a 'planning' drawing/info post that I was meant to do after the NATG, but I kind of got side tracked with this, and now there are some other things I need to do, so it's kind of been pushed back beyond it's purpose, but I still wanna run with the idea.

I'll get to it eventually, but I should start using my journal for my thoughts and plans and stuff, instead of my deviations, from now on. Well, maybe a bit of both.

Random note, the OCs in this may be subject to change if I ever draw them again. I really didn't put that much thought into their design colour wise, even Princess Concord and you'd think I would've given at least her some attention.

Twin Stars has friends now though, nameless as they are. Still no estimate on when that story shall begin, in fact, there are no estimates on anything right now, not until I can reliably judge work time which is something I learned I absolutely cannot do.

Yeah I'll figure stuff out = s =;

Oh yeah! Feel free to provide feedback, criticism, suggestions, tips, ideas, opinions and so on.

The story eh? Not a bad question. I don't want to really go into it yet because I'll be covering stuff in the next story, but..

Just to cover Twilight, I was aiming more for surprise. See, the only books she had referring to the Bicorn were fairly old and not entirely informative. Nothing alluded to a place anything like Cordia being there, but not only that, after finally arriving and wandering around for a bit, who does she see only Celestia walking around as if she owned the place. Naturally she has a few questions and rushes over.

Of course why Celestia is actually there, hanging out with an unheard of princess, who knows? ;P

Fantastic final piece, the lighting is soft yet captures that golden glow of the setting sun. Very effective use of shading really brings it all together. Great work and congratulations on completing the second NATG.

That's great to see a final piece. The lighting is perfect and the colours are vibrant. I love how there's a story to tell behind the image. They're not your best character drawings, but rarity is looking pretty hot and overall, the level of detail fits the scale, so you only notice discrepencies when you really focus on it. I'm devastated at how well you do environments, we need to talk perspective some time :) I hear what you're saying about time estimation though, it's so hard -_-'

The building at the near-left/near-center somehow reminds me of an Islam mosque.

Probably a bit of inspiration slipped in from middle-eastern styles of architecture too, so I wouldn't be surprised. I was a big fan of Persian stuff too actually, at one point.

Actually I guess I'm a big fan of pretty much all architecture everywhere in general.

It's probably not the building, though. I guess the crescent moon links pretty strongly with Islam, but I actually intended it to be a homage to Luna. Unfortunately Cordia doesn't have much to work with in terms of Luna's colour scheme.. the gold and white is much better suited to Celestia..

I'll keep it in mind for later though. Thanks!

Then do something else similar of a Victorian era building. I like steampunk.

Steampunk eh? I have an idea for something, but no promise on when I'll get around to it. Not certain if I can pull it off good either but we'll see.

Can you try putting a catholic cross on top of one of the buildings you draw next time? If not, that's okay.

Why is there a red unicorn with two horns?

Really good question! ^^

Day 14 [link] of the Equestria Daily NATG was to draw 'an exotic pony' in an exercise to try out world building and stuff. My take was the extremely unoriginal idea of taking a unicorn and sticking on a second horn, creating the bicorn race.

In the last few days of the NATG Twilight, Dash and friends actually visit the bicorn locale, Cordia, which gave me an opportunity to draw them proper. This was going to be the last scene where the gang stumbles upon Celestia walking with the Cordian princess on some diplomatic duty and then there would be some conclusions and stuff which I ended up not doing.

Or in short, it's a story thing from a made-up part of an alternate Equestria.

Not a fic, but it does come from a bit of a story idea I was trying to run with and develop through EqD's Newbie Artist Training Grounds. I'm actually quite interested in doing story illustrations though, maybe in the future I'll end up doing scenes from fics or something, who knows..

~~~FORM LETTER~~~
Ok, so you posted this in the 'Work for Critique' section of the ATG group. So I'mma do that.
Keep in mind however two things:
~I am not a professional, or even remotely experienced.
~I only do traditional art (You know, brushes and ink and stuff.) and as such I may not understand a lot of technical aspects of your work if you are a digital artist
~~~END FORM LETTER~~~

Well I came here to critique stuff... But I can't... Damn...

Very very very well done, especially your lighting. And the detail on that background is impressive to say the least!

Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you for the attempt at least! ^^;

Even the little "I think you're on the right track" is still valid enough feedback and somewhat helpful, especially when you point out the lighting and the background.

As others have said, this is definitely your best work yet. Just... Wow.
You really put a lot of work into this, which is very clearly evident. The colors are very vivid and go together nicely with the lighting and shadows. I really like that sun, and the lighting effect it has on the nearby buildings, a nice touch :D
Smaller pictures are easier to practice with and can be finished much quicker, but I'd for sure like to see more stuff like this every now and then by you. Because this is just... Amazing. You mix traditional and digital very well, I never could color a sketch in Photoshop without it looking weird...

Never say never! My first go at trying this colouring thing was Magedreams ([link] if you haven't seen it yet, non-pony though) which was really just a super basic simple attempt. I think your drawings are perfect for it, but whatever medium you're most comfortable with is best. I really liked your colouring on Day 18 of the NATG in any case!

..Actually, would you mind if I gave colouring some of your stuff a go some time? Very likely not immediately at the rate I'm going ><, but somewhere along the line maybe. I would keep the results private or for whatever use you want.

Well, I guess it just takes practice then, just like everything else in art. You've improved pretty dramatically in coloring since the "Megadreams" piece though! For a first attempt it was pretty good, but your method here is much more refined and detailed. And in only a few months? Maybe I'll give it another try sometime soon...

And sure, I wouldn't mind at all if you colored some of my drawings sometime. And feel free to post it on your page if you want to as well, as long as you credit me I don't have any problem with that :3 I actually think it would be pretty neat to see how your coloring style would mix with my drawings :D

I love this picture. You clearly put a great deal of work into this, and while there may be some issues with perspective, I think the successes far outweigh them! For example: the lighting and shadows, the colorful effect of the light passing through Celestia's mane, and the way the buildings are all distinctive while maintaining common architectural themes.

I also like that Princess Concord is red. Red has been a common theme in both the flags hanging on buildings and the cloaks worm by the citizens. Makes me think that the bicorns chose to use this color in their designs as a way to connect with their ruler.

Well noticed! ok maybe I did put a little thought into Concord
I was thinking a bit about why red was the 'national colour' of Cordia, beyond it originally just being a generic fancy colour for posh foreign ponies, and I think you've nailed it. Conversely I wanted Princess Concord to be wearing a more humbling colour as a respectful return, although it was kind of a bit random that it turned out like that.

Edit: I've been meaning to say this, but keep forgetting. I know I've been a source of support for you going through the NATG, and I wanted to point out that you have similarly been a source of inspiration to me! I have recently begun to push myself more so I may perhaps keep up with you; in particular drawing ponies from a greater variety of angles, instead of drawing most of them from side view as I've been doing.

As for small versus large pictures; feel free to return to the smaller ones. If nothing else, you get to explore more ideas that way. But don't be afraid to do a larger one every once in a while. I myself am preparing to create something larger that I will upload as my 50th deviation, which I should be writing about in my journal shortly.

I've got to say this is definitely your best piece yet! Not sure where to begin!

The lighting is magnificent - I love how you've done the shadows on both the buildings and the ponies. And the depth of the picture is awesome, I have no idea how to do that - it's a really impressive effect. The colours and poses all look great - Twilight is my favourite here, though I do really like Celestia's mane! You have all the little details in your background again, like the flowerbeds, the vines on the wall and the view of the city behind that archway - love it!

Finally, that bicorn filly is so cute ♥

Only thing missing is the little story bit you usually put at the bottom :D Great work! If you want my opinion, I'd prefer to see lots of 'smaller' story-based pictures - like the ones you did during the NATG - rather than a few big ones like this. That said, this was still totally worth the wait, so you should of course do whatever you enjoy more!

Wohoo hoo...it turned out so great! I can't even find proper words to describe it! You've really outdone yourself! I guess it took some time to make this astonishing shadowing.
I love this background! It looks so...you know, ancient! All those ponies are amazingly well done, especially Rarity, Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom!

And I would like to say something: it was well worth waiting! Really!

Great work. I like those lights/shadows. It gives me this "eveningish feeling". Like... in the end of a big day.
Colours are also really good. In some parts it feels like a watercolour but I'm not sure what type of media it is.

Thanks!

The media is a cross between an A2 pencil drawing and digital. If you haven't seen it yet you can look at the base drawing in my scraps here; [link] everything after that stage is digitally done in Photoshop mostly with my mouse, the brush tool and some layers.

Haha oh wow, how is this anything BUT not worth the wait? You even did super fancy realistic shadow casting! I mean sure it has some minor visual bugs here and there, mostly perspective and shadow stuff, but still.

Also the more I stare at it, the more cool things I notice. Rarity reflecting in the pond, Celestia's mane altering the sunlight, etc.

Print–worthy, for real.

Eheh, it's really hard to judge not knowing what the response will be. Working on a consistent upload schedule and then switching and going silent for a while feels weird, and I still don't know if I couldn't have done several still decent quality works in the same time this took, or at least a great number of practice drawings, or something. 12 days feels like a long time and I know better artists can produce brilliant pieces much faster.. or so it seems at least.

The NATG really catapulted me into a realm of art production I have no idea of how to manage, but like I said I guess I'll figure it out in time.

I have no clue about how prints work either yet, but I'm glad you think it's of good enough quality for one! ^^

Sort of! Cordia is a bit of a mish-mash of different architecture styles I randomly and vaguely know of. Greek/Roman definitely came out strong here, more than I thought, but there should be a bit of gardens of Babylon too, and some generic medieval French/Spanish/made-up/fatansy.

It was originally meant to be my own personal Canterlot but it wouldn't be inappropriate to think of it as some alternate pony holy Rome crossed with other other random bits, I dunno, the background of the place isn't that well developed yet.
